Tackling Sleep Poverty
Our nurseries are the proud partners in the ‘Bedtime Blessings Project’. Through collaboration with Family Corner CIC, the nurseries have helped to set up an initiative which ‘blesses’ families in need with bedding resources, enabling children to have a heathy and restful good night’s sleep.
‘Bed poverty’ affects over 5 million families in the UK, with children sleeping on dirty mattresses, many without covers, sheets or pillows. Many children have no bed of their own and have to share a bed with siblings or parents, or sleep on the floor. This issue is one which has been highlighted by several Family Support Networks, charities and bed manufacturers. These situations mean that the well-being and health of children is inevitably compromised - with many sleeping poorly and suffering from poor mental agility the following day.
Ducklings Day Nurseries collects charitable donations in the forms of duvets, pillows, covers, mattresses and bedding. These supplies are then given to the support charity Family Corner CIC who distributes resources to families-in-need as appropriate. We have helped the charity to secure storage units to house surplus bedding so that supplies can be collected, organised and distributed appropriately. Our support has resulted in numerous positive results and our case studies illustrate the massive difference that the project has upon the children’s current lives. We are working across the North West and in three different L.E.A’s to ensure that the project reaches as many children as possible. We currently liaise with ‘The Brick’ in Wigan
We believe that the impact of a good night’s sleep is immeasurable and that this project can have a long-term, lasting effect on a child’s lifestyle and well-being.
